"Young people in other countries are going to school 25, 30 percent longer than our students here," Duncan told the AP. "I want to just level the playing field."

This statement is debatable as it can be argued that hour for hour American Kids spend more time in school although other countries do have longer school years.  This is probably due to more vacation days.

The idea of more time in school has been met with mixed feelings.  Kids certainly are not crazy about the idea.

Then there's the plus side that children will be babysat... err... taught while parents work longer hours.

Longer school days and longer school hours means more money and possibly more work for teachers.  It could also mean that the same teachers are asked to work more days and more hours for the same pay.

Regardless of how anyone feels about it, children do need to spend more time at study.  Whether it is in school in structured classrooms, at home, in after school homework and enrichment, or in an after school tutoring program that is a little less structured than school, schools are desperately in need of an overhaul.  Meanwhile it is getting little tweaks that my not be making much of a difference.   We need a fresh approach to education.
