The overall consensus is that the Race to the Top initiative introduced by Arne Duncan and President Obama that pits public school districts against each other to compete for extra funds is a bad idea. See the announcement below:
People are downright verbal about calling it stupid, misled, or just wrong. I can' say I agree with it either, but I do believe it is a step in the right direction.
Personally, I would scrap education as we know it and go back to basics. Students would learn to read, write, and do math at the highest levels humanly possible. Once they do these things, they could then learn science, social studies, and foreign language, preferably in high school.
Many would say it's a good thing I am not in charge of education and I am grateful too as the thought of being burned at the stake is not my idea of a good time. In comparison, the race to the top program might spur educators to make much needed radical changes.
One very true comment being thrown around again and again is "throwing more money at the program won't fit it." Race to the top, however is not throwing money at problem schools, it is awarding money to schools that make radical changes.
I can get behind that.
