Arne Duncan, US Education Secretary appointed by president Obama, has introduced his $5 billion "Race to the Top" fund.  The purpose for the fund is to get states to make progress in the areas of

  • Improving teacher effectiveness
  • Creating better assessments aligned to rigorous standards
  • Fixing failing schools
  • Using data systems to track student achievement. The details of how states can qualify for this money will be released later this year.

The details on this proposed program are not clear just yet, but Arne definately has some ideas on changes school should make.  His ideas so far aren't necessarily popular with students or even teachers in many cases.  Suggested changes include more time in school such as six or seven day weeks and 11 or 12 months a year.

My guess is he is looking at the way China and India (our main competition) educate kids and trying to duplicate it.  I think he's off track, but my ideas would be even less popular.  I am curious to see how this all will pan out.
