Yesterday, Lauren Starkey, the College Admissions Examiner wrote about colleges adjusting to the economic crisis and wrote specically about one college that is offering a three year program to save a year in tuition and room and board costs.
Perhaps private schools need to start making adjustments as well. A recent Atlanta news report stated that Atlanta Public schools are experiencing an increase in enrollment as parents begin to question whether they are getting what they are paying for in private schools.
In chicago, private schools are also prepping for economic hard times.
"From prestigious schools that attract wealthy families to church schools that serve the poor, private schools are feeling the pinch of an economy gone bad. Financial aid applications and scholarships are on the rise, and admissions applications are flat to slightly declining, private school officials say....When the Archdiocese of Chicago announced at the end of January that emergency aid was available for families who lost jobs this school year, it was deluged within days."
Even I as a homeschooler, have had to make choices that would cut my educational budget next year. I will be using less tutoring services next year and may even be using a public school sponsored Spanish class next year. If there is a free resource to homeschool my kids, I am definately considering it. I am apparently not alone. Many homeschooling parents I know are considering public school for highschool to decrease household costs and perhaps go back to work. Many private school parents have decided that they can no longer afford to keep kids in private schools. Alot of parents are making hard educaational decisions this year based on lack of money,or fear of not having enough.
