I took it upon myself this week to begin compiling homeschool resources for kids in my county. When I began homeschooling my kids six or so years ago (I've lost count) there were several local homeschooling groups with a plethora of activities. However, as many of these kids graduated, or moved to public school for high school, those groups fell apart. There are still some groups we could participate in, but they are a good 30 -45 mintues away by car.
I must say the response has been immediate. Another homeschooler began contacting me with resources she was familiar with, and is helping me build the database. In just two weeks, we have compiled a list of homeschooling activities that should keep all of the kids in the county busy.
There are community programs, tons of sports activities, including two leagues, Co-ops, classes, and all inclusive homeschool programs. No homeschooling family who can find this blog should complain of being bored with nothing to do.
While it took a bit of initiative and sacrifice of time to put together this blog, I can see that it has been worth it. I am finding all kinds of things my kids can do, meanwhile, providing this resource to my local community.
I don't mention this to brag and say "look how giving I am, look what I have acccomplished", but to encourage homescholers all over the country, to do the same, if such a resource does not exist in your area. Because I live in Greater Atlanta, you would think that such resources are already documented, but I actually live 30 minutes away, so it was necessary to make a separate resource for where we live.
I certainly could not have compiled this list if it weren't for all of the local homeschoolers and homeschool friendly businesses who were willing to provide learning and enrichment activities for us. My list consists of homeschool skate schedules, homeschool drama clubs, and other activities formed by parents and other people in the community.
So if you are a homeschooler and you don't know what activities there are for homeschoolers in your area, begin searching and compiling information for yourself and other homeschoolers. Or, you can begin or sponsor a single activity for homeschooler in your area, such as scouts, chess, art, a lego league, or a spanish class... Whater you are gifted at. You can't expect a community to just exist if you are not willing to participate in it.
