It seems that there is a major shortage in availability of college courses. Due to college cutbacks, teacher layoffs, and increased enrollment, it is taking more and more years to complete their education as the classes they need are not available when they need them. For every year an education is extended because a core class needed for degree completion is not available, the chance of a student not finishing at all increases. Students and their parents must continue to pay for living expenses, college fees, and filler classes to keep the student enrolled full time. Sure, this may make it convenient to have a double major, but it would be nice if they could get the education they are seeking within a four year period.
The situation might seem hopeless, but it is not. The creative student will find ways around classes not being available. Some have managed to arrange independant study to finish off their diploma. Others have taken core classes independantly in order to give them more time and oppotunity to get into classes needed for their major.
The best way to get those core courses out of the way is by testing through classes. The CLEP program allows students to take tests in lieu of many 101 classes and some upper level core classes as well. Read: CLEP Your Way to Lower Tuition Bills . In addition to CLEP courses, there are also Dantes, exams. Check with your college to find out more about how to get credit for prior knowledge or life experience.
If you are a parent or high school student reading this, you should be aware that you can avoid the extended college plan by taking AP courses while still in high school. Students can accumulate enough AP or Advanced Placment classes to offset the extra time it now takes to finish a college degree.
