All autoimmune dieases have one thing in common: the body attacks it's own cells because it is unaware that these cells are not invaders. After the initial meeting of a virus or bacteria and the body, the immune system makes the appropriate antigen to conquer that particular invader should they ever meet again. These antigens are made up of proteins. No two antigens are alike, and antigens vary from person to person.
Most of the time, the immune system is smart. It can distinguish between friend and foe; however, when we eat animal proteins such as cow's milk, some proteins slip into the blood stream without being totally digested. The immune system regards these undigested proteins as invaders and makes antigens to fight them off. Now, the body's own cells are being destroyed along with the invaders. If this process spins out of control, this self-destructive process can be deadly.
This is a brief summary of what I understand to be true about autoimmune disorders and nutrition. I do not proclaim that a diet free of animal products will cure AIDS, but I do believe that by eliminating these harmful proteins from the diet while loading up on nutrient-rich plant-foods, such as vegetables, beans, fruits, and whole-grains, you can give your body a fightling chance.
