Welcome to the Disease Prevention book club.

Eat for Health is Dr. Joel Fuhrman's nutritional prescription for superior health.  To make selecting the most nutritious foods for eating, Dr. Fuhrman has developed the ANDI ranking system and gives recommendations for maximizing the nutrient density of your diet.

To enjoy excellent health, you must eat nutrient-rich food. Foods that are rich in nutrients and low in calories offer the best protection against disease.

Dr. Fuhrman's straightforward mathematical formula for determining nutrient density is simple and makes a sense. He calls his formula "the health equation," and it reads this way

H = N/C

(where H is your health and N means micronutrients, i.e.vitamins, minerals, phytochemicals, and C refers to the calorie content of a specific food)

Dr. Fuhrman lists the ANDI scores of common foods are found on pages 51 through 53 in Eat for Health.

The "golden foods" are based on the ANDI ratings. Because these "golden foods" rank high on the ANDI scale, they can be eaten in unlimited quantities. Dr. Fuhrman creates 5 categories of "golden foods" to make life easier. Examples of each group are listed in page 55.

  1. Leafy green vegetables
  2. Solid green vegetables
  3. Non-green, high-nutrient vegetables
  4. Beans and legumes (cooked, canned, or sprouted)
  5. Fresh fruits

Having a good selection of these foods on hand at all times increases the odds that you will consume them. When you go to the market, be sure to buy plenty of these items. Purchase foods that you haven't tasted before and scour the internet for recipes and preparation ideas.
