It has been the recommendation of several health and exercise organizations that older individuals receive clearance from their doctor before beginning an exercise program. That recommendation has accomplished two things:
The EASY (Exercise and Screening for You) tool brings out key health issues that would put one at risk during exercise. By answering the EASY 6 questions regarding chest pain, blood pressure, and other important health items, individuals who want to begin exercising are better served: the majority of adverse outcomes involving exercise does not occur at low to moderate levels (the level that most older adults sustain).
Needless obstacles must be removed if we are to increase the number of Americans who are physically active. This self-clearance test is an excellent first step.
