Former England and Man City striker has found himself evicted from his hotel in Ankara. Now playing for Turkish side Ankaragucu, the 29-year old found himself confused after his eviction and the cancellation of training. Ankaragucu, a Turkish SuperLig side based in the capital, is undergoing financial problems and difficulties paying its players, a concern voiced by Vassell. The Ankara-based club has had very little success in Turkey's top league, and one has to wonder how long Vassell will stay with them. [Hurriyet]
35,000 pay their respects to Germany and Hannover 96 keeper Robert Enke. Struggling with depression, the 32-year old committed suicide by placing himself in the path of a commuter train earlier this week. German football has found itself reeling from the loss, not only because Enke was the front-runner for the number one spot for Germany between the sticks, but the surprise of such a high-profile athlete who felt his options were limited to suicide. Robert Enke will not be remembered for his performances for club and country, but rather as a sad reminder that depression is an undiscriminating illness, and even the strongest and fittest professional isn't immune. Sir Alex Ferguson receives his punishment for labeling referee Alan Wiley unfit with a four-match ban and a 20,000GBP (about $30K) fine. With two of the matches suspended, Ferguson looks set to be in the stands for Manchester United's matches against Everton at home and Portsmouth away. The referee's union finds this a missed opportunity in terms of setting a standard for the respect refs get (or don't get). Did we see any other outcome? Fergie misses a home match against a struggling Toffees side and another away against bottom of the table Pompey. 20 grand? That's less than a week's wages for the gaffer. A slap on the wrist, if anything. Ferguson's criticism of match officials isn't new; he's managed to face FA conduct charges over similar incidents five times in six years. [Guardian]
Perennial backup goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini has been injured in a car crash this morning on his motorcycle. Fracturing his wrists and injuring his pelvis, the Spurs keeper faced what police had originally described as "life-changing injuries". While many who watch Spurs may wonder how Cudicini could be sitting on the bench with Heurelho Gomes between the sticks, and now gaffer Harry Redknapp finds his goalkeeping options cut in half. [Indy]
