The Big Texan on Route 66! We have all heard the legends, and been told the stories. It has been alluded to in movies, and television, without being named. It is the Big Texan steak house. The Big Texan was an icon of route 66, and now stands just outside of Amarillo, on what is now Interstate 40. This is the place where you can order a 72 ounce steak, shrimp cocktail, and salad, and not pay if you finish the whole thing. Ah, the stuff that dreams are made of.
Should you accept the challenge, you are seated at a table on a stage, near the front of the room. As soon as you are served, a timer is started. You have one hour – bon apatite. It may seem that eating a four and a half pound steak, along with another pound of incidentals, and the beverages with which they are washed down, would be impossible, and yet it happens.
According to the website, winners have ranged in age from 11 to 69, with weights as low as 110 pounds. A number have attained this achievement more than once, including a married couple from Nevada, who have won the challenge on ten occasions – so far. There is at least one diner who has eaten two of these gigantic steaks at one sitting.
Aside from, the myth, and the hype of the contest, this is actually a great steak house. I have been here twice, and had a great meal, and a good time, on both occasions. The place also gives the visitor an opportunity to eat a piece of history. For the adventurous, with an hour to spare, and a big empty space to be filled, there may even be a chance to make a little history of your own.
