The MIlwaukee Air Expo is now the Milwaukee Air and Water Show. Wisconsin has long been known for its famous EAA air show and fly-in, every summer; but for Milwaukeeans with their eyes to the sky, there is something just a bit closer to home. The Milwaukee Air and Water show (formerly the Milwaukee Air Expo) will be resuming this year, on July 25-26, after a hiatus of a couple of years. Conflict over who was to finance the show, and who owned the rights to the show, caused it to be put on hold for a couple of years, and are responsible for the name change.
As of this writing, headliners include the Golden Knights parachute team (U.S. Army), and the Thunderbirds (U.S. Air Force). It is likely that there will also be fly bys, some Coast Guard demonstrations, and some stunt teams, as was the case with the last air show a couple of years ago. For now, the web site is pretty vague, except for dates and sponsors. The good news is, that the show is well sponsored and that it will probably become a regular part of the Milwaukee festival season.
One of the great things about an air show is that there are no bad seats, and no need to show up hours early to stand in line under the heat of the summer sun. Certainly, those who wish to come early and spend the day at the lake are welcome; but there is no need. As long as you can see the sky, you can see the show. The show is free and essentially encompasses the entire lakefront, near the Art Center, and the Downtown area. For those who desire a bit more comfort, and the V.I.P. treatment, a grandstand will be set up along the centerline of the show, with reserved seating available. This may be just the thing if the day turns out to be hot and sunny. There will be vendors of food and drink, as well as representatives of the show’s various sponsors, including the Air Force.
The show coincides with Germanfest, held at the Milwaukee Summerfest grounds, maybe a mile south, and the two might make an interesting compliment, and make for a great day at the lakefront. There is to be a regular show on Saturday and Sunday, from 10 am to 4 pm, with a special night show from 7:00 to 9:30 on Saturday evening. The night show will be a bit south of the day show, putting it right in front of the grounds where Germanfest is to be held. As with all of the lakefront festivals, Germanfest will end with a fireworks display. To my mind, the air show, great German food and shows, and then fireworks makes for a great full day at the lake.
