If you haven’t been to Bermuda lately, you have no idea what you are missing and if you have never been to The Reefs, there’s certainly yet another reason to book your flight today. This amazing beachside retreat is located on a small cove with fabulous sunset views, and a friendly atmosphere. There are only 65 guest rooms here so not only will you receive personalized service but the dining here is exceptionally intimate.
There are three restaurants to choose from during your stay here – Ocean Echo, Royston’s and Coconuts. Whether you are looking for a supper club atmosphere, relaxed al fresco dining experience with the sand under your feet, or a more formal dinner, The Reefs certainly offers something for everyone.
We had dinner one evening at the recently expanded and renovated Ocean Echo, set high atop the ocean with floor to ceiling glass windows that offer an encompassing 180-degree view of the crystal clear Bermuda waters. (There was a couple getting married on the beach the evening we dined here).

Designed to be Bermuda's most serene and romantic fine dining experience, Ocean Echo features colors and materials chosen to enhance both the native architectural elements of Bermudian stone and high peaked ceiling with cedar trusses. Silvery blue-green tones for the furnishings are accented by a unique collection of Bermudian works of art and nautical antiques.
Ocean Echo offered imaginative cuisine and an extensive wine list. The menu here has a unique selection of hot and cold appetizer selections along with some intriguing soups and salads. We started off our evening with a sampling of the seafood platter, a generous mélange of fresh shrimp, tender mussels and smoked scallops complemented with a tangy sesame lime dressing. Other cold appetizers included prosciutto ham cornets with port wine, poached pear and chevre quenelles as well as a smoked salmon and avocado chutney roll with micro greens and cherry balsamic lace.
The Bermuda fish chowder should not be missed served with Gosling’s black rum and Outerbridge’s sherry pepper sauce, loaded with chunks of fish in a savory yet slightly spicy base. The classic Caesar salad was topped with a creamy garlicky dressing and served with a shaved baguette crouton.
The entrees here are to be commended. For the seafood lover, the must try dish was the pan fried rockfish, three enormous pieces of fish, which was served with wilted spinach and apple beurre blanc. My husband sampled the grilled beef tenderloin, a tender and juicy melt-in-your-mouth cut served with smoked bacon sauce, shallots glazed with Bermuda honey and sautéed asparagus.
Other entrees included mustard and Bermuda fresh herb crusted rack of lamb, chicken fricassee supreme and two vegetarian entrees – asparagus and pumpkin risotto as well as the Ocean Echo vegetarian delight, which comes complete with three color polenta, crisp spring roll, stuffed baked potato with refried beans, and goat cheese and potato hay.
Our server was excellent, extremely attentive and friendly, constantly making sure our water glasses were full and wine glasses were topped off. The servers here seem to realize that you are on vacation and don’t rush you in and out of the restaurant. If you want to linger over a cup of coffee while taking in the breathtaking scenery, they are happy to let you just relax and enjoy it all.
We met several couples here who have returned year after year and after dining, we realized it was for good reason. As soon as you enter the restaurant, you will soon feel like you are truly welcome and part of a small family. We look forward to returning soon to The Reefs family.
