New restaurant opens on Martha's Vineyard
Chilmark Tavern on Martha’s Vineyard’s secluded outer reaches will open on schedule Saturday, May 23rd. Dinner only will be served seven days a week from 5:30 to 10:30 p.m.
The buzz is that the food will be a fabulous combination of fresh caught fish and shellfish from island waters, with most meat raised locally, and produce sourced exclusively from Cape and island farms … all stirred together with the creativity of one of the Boston area’s most consistently cutting edge chefs (Paul O’Connell has owned and operated the wildly popular Chez Henri, in Cambridge, MA, for 14 years).
Now, about the cocktails …Chilmark is one of New England’s “dry” towns, so patrons must BYOB, but O’Connell is quick to point out that a menu of refreshing fruit and herb blends, with names like The Bee’s Knees, Mary Jane and Cucumber-Cilantro Frappe “will make adding your own spirits part of the fun.” Small corkage fee for wines.
The Tavern’s décor is a minimalist‘s fantasy: white walls, lots of windows, bare wood planked floors and high ceilings. Parking is plentiful and a wraparound porch provides shade and a comfortable perch. Prices are island-moderate and an abbreviated bar menu with burgers and “stuffies” will be available. Car-less visitors may reach Chilmark on the island’s regular bus service. Reservations suggested but not required.
