Gifford’s Ice Cream (www.giffordsicecream.com), central Maine’s family-owned and operated ice cream company, recently earned a perfect score and the title of “World’s Best Chocolate Ice Cream” in the World Dairy Expo 2009 contest. This is the second “World’s Best” win for Gifford’s Chocolate Ice Cream; the company also earned the coveted award at the 2007 competition.
Gifford’s Ice Cream focuses on flavors using fresh, pasteurized, growth-hormone-free milk from local Maine dairy farms. Flavors are available in either quarts or half gallons. We sampled a quart of the popular Moose Tracks, creamy vanilla ice cream loaded with peanut butter cups and swirled with moose track fudge. You haven’t tried chocolate ice cream this creamy until you have sampled Gifford’s chocolate ice cream. Other flavors include Maine wild blueberry, raspberry chocolate truffle, Maine lobster tracks (complete with lobster colored chocolate cups), peanut butter caramel cookie dough, apple pie and pink peppermint stick.
For a low fat option, try the black raspberry chocolate chip frozen yogurt. The frozen yogurt was so rich that you won’t believe it’s not ice cream but best of all, the frozen yogurt has half the fat.
Available throughout northern New England at Hannaford locations, Shaw’s Supermarkets, and Roche Bros. locations, Gifford’s Ice Cream also is offered in several hundred ice cream stands throughout New England, New York and New Jersey.
