Exotic pets to rescue: Part 3 – Scales and Feathers
Actor Nicolas Cage was forced to give-up his two snakes earlier this year when his neighbors complained. Luckily the two cobras, named Moby and Sheba, were accepted by a local zoo. Many other people faced with a similar situation must turn to reptile sanctuaries for help.
Jesse Rothacker realized that typical animal groups were overwhelmed rescuing cats and dogs, so in 2003 he opened a non-profit rescue for reptiles called Forgotten Friend in Lancaster PA. He says the organization is the, “bridge between unwanted pet reptiles and loving homes.” His facility houses snakes, turtles and even gators.
If you do not live close to Pennsylvania there are reptile rescues all over the country like the: Alabama Reptile Rescue Sanctuary and Mountain Aire Sanctuary in CO. Both specialize in reptiles from their area: turtles, bearded dragons, gators, lizards, tarantulas and snakes.
If you are looking for a pet that is a little less scaly, but still want something unique why not adopt a bird. Sadly just like puppy mills, there are bird mills too. Bird sanctuaries rescue unwanted and neglected pet birds of every breed. Here are just three rescue groups that help: Foster Parrot, Ltd in Rockland MA, Lucky Parrot in Naples FL and Midwest Avian Adoption and Rescue Service, Inc. in St. Paul, MN.
If you want to share your home with any type of pet, even an exotic one, more than likely there is an animal rescue organization in a community near you that will help you adopt one. Please visit a shelter or rescue to adopt. You will be giving a homeless animal a second chance for a happy and safe life.
