The Humane Society Legislative Fund has a challenge for people who love animals and are tired of seeing them treated as second class citizens. They are running a contest called “There Oughta Be A Law” to see who can submit the best proposal for a pet-friendly law that “oughta” be on the books.

The L.A. Times reported that the contest to protect animals runs from now until October 5th and that animal advocates can submit their proposal online.

A panel of experts will select the winning proposed law on October 25th at the organization’s Party Animal event. Party Animal is an annual event where pet lovers get together at house parties or block parties around the country to discuss animal-friendly causes.

The winner of the contest will be awarded a trip to Washington, D.C. and the opportunity to help lobby for the new law.

"Every good law starts as an idea, and people who care about animals know first-hand the problems and challenges they face," said Michael Markarian, the Legislative Fund's president. "Many lawmakers run similar contests each year and some great new laws have bubbled up through that process. We think it is a great way to get people who care about animals involved in helping shape future public policy reforms for animals."
