The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) reported that the House of Representatives voted in favor of protecting wild horses and burros and passed H.R. 1018.
Nick Rahall (D-W.Va.) introduced the bill which is known as the Restore Our American Mustangs (ROAM) Act. It came about in response to the mismanagement of the animals by the Bureau of Land Management. BLM has been rounding up thousands of horses, but only adopting a small percentage of them. This has left more than 30,000 animals in permanent captivity. Last year BLM even considered slaughtering the horses to reduce the cost of maintaining them.
If the ROAM Act is approved by the Senate it will ban the commercial slaughter of the horses and burros, expand fertility control, expand adoptions and most importantly it will allow the animals to return to roam on public lands.
The goal of the original BLM program was to “Protect wild horses and burros on the range and maintain them as symbols of American culture,” said Wayne Pacelle, CEO of the HSUS.
The BLM program has strayed way off course. But, if the ROAM Act gets passed into law it will put the rescue effort back on its path and help it achieve new goals as well.
