Adopt or sponsor Fluffy during Adop-A-Shelter-Cat Month.
Fluffy is a friendly  3 1/2 year old boy, looking for a new home.

In case you missed the news, June is Adopt-A-Shelter-Cat Month. It’s an annual campaign sponsored by the ASPCA. June is also the official Adopt-A-Cat Month sponsored by the American Humane Association (AHA).

If you are wondering why both of these national animal welfare organizations chose to recognize homeless felines during the same month, it’s because spring and summer are when thousands of unwanted kittens are born.

Many of those kittens end up at animal shelters and rescue groups in hopes of finding new families. If you check with any local shelter or sanctuary at this time of year, you will find that they are overflowing with both adorable kittens and friendly adult cats.

The AHA invites animal lovers to “visit the fabulous felines at local animal shelters and take home a new best friend.” Their website offers downloadable cat care tips and a poster.

The ASPCA is holding an online photo contest for the most beautiful adopted feline from a shelter and local SPCAs are promoting the cause with a variety of special events for cat lovers. Check out the events in your area.

The AHA reminds people how adopting a cat will enrich your life:

  • Cats will keep you entertained with their playful antics.
  • Cats are very affectionate and love to cuddle with you.
  • Having a cat can reduce your blood pressure and prevent heart disease.
  • Cats are very clean – they bathe themselves!
  • Cats are independent and can be left alone while you are at work.
  • Cats do not need to be housebroken – using the litter box comes naturally to them.
  • Cats do not need a lot of space. They are perfect pets for apartments and smaller homes.
  • Taking care of a cat can help teach a child responsibility and humane values.
  • Cats get plenty of exercise living indoors. Just 15 minutes of playtime each day will satisfy a cat.
  • Approximately 4 million homeless cats end up in animal shelters every year in the United States. By adopting, you’ll be saving a life.

And don’t forget to have your new adopted friend vaccinated and spayed or neutered! This is the only way to prevent future Adopt-A-Shelter-Cat Months.

And finally, if you’re not ready to adopt or have allergies you may want to consider sponsoring a homeless cat. Most shelters include this as an option on their websites.
