The approximate 120,000 lucky dogs in San Francisco will be seeing more of the sights and sounds of the city thanks to the technology of a new website called – Fido Factor.
Fido Factor, the ultimate guide to dog friendly locations in San Francisco launched their website, mobile optimized website, and iPhone/iPod touch application today. Bay Area dog owners can use Fido Factor free-of-charge to find pre-qualified canine friendly locations, learn important dog safety tips and support homeless animals in San Francisco.
Co-founder and CEO of Fido Factor, Justin O’Neill has always loved the company of dogs. When he moved from his childhood home in Ohio to San Francisco he was impressed with the “dog friendly” city. People included their dogs as they ran errands or went out on-the-town.
However, O’Neill noticed that it was a “hit and miss” situation regarding which restaurants and retail stores would welcome dogs into their establishments and that most dog owners relied on sources from friends.
That’s when he decided to launch a fully coordinated guide to the dog friendly locations in the area. Dog owners will now be able to browse through Fido Factor to research 226 restaurants, 20 bars and 272 retail stores plus attractions and parks that welcome pups.
Each establishment also lists 8 specific details, called Fido Factors regarding the type of dog they can accommodate. Fido Factors include: maximum size of a dog, leash policies, any breakables in the store, size of the location, type of flooring, dogs on staff, water bowls available and whether they serve treats.
They even list details such as whether there is a covered area to keep your dog in the shade during the summer or if space heaters are available for cold weather.
These details and extensive listings might have been enough for most websites, but as an animal-lover O’Neill decided to go a step further and help the homeless pets in San Francisco, as well.
Fido Factor has partnered with the San Francisco SPCA and will make regular donations based upon the participation from visitors to the site. Fido Factor has an interactive component that asks guests to review their experience at each recommended restaurant or retail store and to add new dog friendly locations.
For their participation Fido Factor will donate $1.00 for every new restaurant or retail store, $.50 for the first review of a location and $.25 for every additional review.
“We’re very excited to be contributing this resource to the San Francisco dog community and to have found such a great partner in The San Francisco SPCA, said O’Neill. “With its thriving dog community we felt San Francisco was the perfect location to debut our technology, and by working with the SF/SPCA we’ve been able to incorporate a robust education and philanthropy component.”
The SPCA offers a comprehensive education section on Fido Factor, complete with safety tips for taking your pooch out on the town. Visitors can even ask specific questions about their dog’s behavior from trainers at the SPCA.
If Fido Factor/San Francisco is a success maybe dog-lovers in other parts of the country will someday have access to a great resource like this too.
