Animal welfare groups in Dallas are questioning the judgment of city officials who returned 27 dogs to their owner after they were seized two weeks ago for neglect.
When 28 dogs were taken away from their home because they were emaciated, the Metroplex Animal Coalition thought their owner would be have criminal charges brought against him.
But when Dallas Animal Services veterinarians examined the dogs, they found only one dog that was sick and had to be euthanized. They determined the rest to be in “reasonably good shape and happy socialized dogs.”
Skip Trimble, the Chairman of the Dallas Animal Shelter Commission disagreed. He saw pictures of the dogs and cannot understand how anyone would consider them to be in good shape.
There are also concerns because the owner only paid $350 to get his dogs back when the typical fee should have been in excess of $3,000. Skip Trimble also questioned why the city didn’t spay and neuter the canines and micro-chip them. This is required by city code.
The city defended their position by saying the owner promised to take the dogs out of Dallas and therefore they didn’t see the need to alter the animals.
Trimble wants to make sure that a situation like this “doesn’t happen again.” Animal welfare groups in the area will be following up with Dallas Animal Services to determine why this case was handled differently and to decide if they put innocent animals back into a dangerous situation.
