Skittles is a sweet, friendly kitten that was rescued by a Good Samaritan who saw him wandering around the streets in Greenville, SC. The little guy has a painful and life-threatening eye infection that caused him to go blind. He’ll need surgery on both of his eyes once his infection is under control.
Skittles is part of the thousands of unwanted kittens being born from late spring through late summer during “Kitten Season.”
Skittles’ young life has been filled with needless suffering because someone didn’t want to take responsibility for an unwanted litter of kittens. The severity of his infection didn’t happen overnight. It was probably caused by a neglectful owner who didn’t get medical help for him or because he and his littermates were abandoned. Skittles is not a wild “feral” kitten, he’s a friendly cat who apparently has had contact with people and isn’t afraid of them.
Many people are under the impression that cats can live on their own, outside with minimal attention by a human guardian. This is completely false, especially with vulnerable kittens that need proper nutrition, shelter and vaccinations to protect them from disease.
Noah’s Ark Animal Rescue came to the rescue of Skittles and will provide a foster home until he is healthy enough for surgery. This specialized organization is not a shelter. They are a group of volunteers that “supply emergency medical and surgical care to abused animals.”
Their website says this about their mission, “We focus on animals that depend on us to fight for their right to live.”
It will take weeks of care before Skittles will be healthy enough to have the surgery that will more than likely claim both of his eyes. Then Noah’s Ark hopes he will find a permanent home where he will be loved and treated as a member of the family.
