When a resident in Onset, MA heard the constant cries of a kitten, she contacted the local fire department for help. After searching a bit they found an 8-week-old orange kitten tightly wedged in a PVC pipe.
The fire department worked more than an hour to set her free. Now the tiny feline that survived in the pipe without food or water has become a local celebrity. She was turned over to A Helping Paws shelter who aptly named her, Piper.
"She was wedged in there extremely well," Chrissy Tomkiewicz, executive director of the shelter (where Piper is recovering from dehydration and an arm injury), told PEOPLE Pets. "I think she got in the pipe, and was trying to get through it."
Piper is one of the thousands of homeless felines born each year during “Kitten Season,” which runs from late spring to late summer. It is the time of year when most kittens are born. Piper was lucky to be saved. The fate for the majority of unwanted kittens is usually very sad as most end up euthanized at shelters or suffer from starvation and illnesses.
Piper will be healing from her injuries at the shelter for the next several weeks and is expected to make a full recovery. Then A Helping Paws hopes she will be adopted into a loving home. The tiny kitten’s fame has several potential families already interested.
If you are looking to add a new cat to your family, please take the time to see who is available at your local animal shelter and rescue groups. Most are absolutely overflowing with adorable, loving homeless kitties.
