Actress Nia Vardalos star of the new movie, My Life in Ruins credits her 6-year-old Labrador Retriever named Manny with changing her life. She adopted Manny at the suggestion of her doctor when infertility treatments failed.

Nia Vardalos and her husband Ian Gomez struggled with infertility for 10-years when her doctor suggested she adopt a canine companion.

Vardalos told People magazine, “It was the best advice I’ve ever been given. He was actually part of my healing. We got him as part of the end of the fertility road.”

Vardalos, who became famous in her debut movie, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, turned to Petfinder.com when she began her search for a four-legged addition to her family. Petfinder.com is a national database that enables people to put in specific information regarding the type of pet they want. It then provides a list of those pets and the name of animal welfare organization that rescued it .

Searchers can find pets in animal shelters, rescue sancutaries and  at breed specific organizations, like Vardalos did.

Within days of her search the actress and her husband found Manny and welcomed the two-year-old purebred pup into their family. Now four years later, the sweet Labrador is a vital part of the Vardalos-Gomez clan who sleeps at the foot of his owners’ bed every night, until his snoring gets too loud.

Recently Manny became a physical fitness trainer for Nia when her doctor recommended that she drop a few pounds. Nia calls it the “Manny 6-Lb. Challenge.”

Nia designed a diet program for herself and stayed active with daily walks and play time with Manny. The big dog was particularly fond of chasing after a special tennis ball and the game became part of a routine she enjoyed with her adopted 4-year-old daughter, as well.

When Manny isn’t acting as a fitness trainer he spends his time chewing on his favorite rawhide bones.
