With more than 3,300 followers, Romeo the Cat is one popular fellow on Twitter. That popularity has helped Romeo’s owner Caroline Golon raise nearly $5,000 on his behalf for animal charities.
Golon adopted Romeo who is a two-time rescue kitty. Seven weeks ago she decided it would be fun to open a Twitter account in Romeo’s name and to attract a little attention, Golon offered to donate 5 cents to charity for every person who became a follower on Romeo’s page. Followers flocked to read the mini-blog posts about Romeo the Cat and help contribute to animal welfare organizations.
Then some pet loving fans took the cause to a new level and began matching Golon and Romeo’s contributions. Even companies like FURminator, Petco and Iams got involved by donating products to the non-profit groups supported by Romeo the Cat.
Golon told Morning Call in a recent interview, “I’m an accidental fund-raiser. I love animals, and it just seemed like a way to make a difference.”
Romeo and Golon choose a different organization to benefit each month. This month the recipient is Kitten Rescue of Los Angeles. Other previous benefactors have been the Humane Society, Forgotten Persian Rescue and Animals in Distress.
