Well it is official; the Obama family has adopted a Portuguese water dog puppy. The six-month-old puppy named Bo was a gift from Sen. Ted Kennedy and is absolutely adorable.

From all of the media build-up to this moment, the public knows that the selection of this particular dog was thoroughly analyzed and was decided to be the best option for Mr. and Mrs. Obama and their daughters. And that decision would have been O.K. if the Obama’s were a private family, but as the very public first family of the United States their decision hurt homeless pets.

I am not trying to “get on my soapbox”, but animal welfare organizations everywhere were counting on the President to set an example by adopting a shelter dog - especially when 6 million homeless pets die in shelters every year. Every major national animal advocacy group in the country offered to help the first family choose a dog, but the offers went unnoticed.

In February when Michelle Obama told People magazine that her family had decided to adopt a Portuguese water dog, I calculated they would never be able to find a homeless dog from this uncommon breed.

And now to compensate for their change of plans CNN reported the President and his wife will make a donation to the D.C. Humane Society.

“The donation was first reported by the Washington Post which described the plan to give the money as ‘intended (by the Obamas) to lend a serious symbolic note’ to their original pledge to get a shelter animal.”

The Humane Society of the United States had this to say about the donation and how the President and his administration could protect animals across the country.

“President Obama can do even more for animal protection through the policies of federal agencies that deal with the welfare of millions of pets,” the statement said, by “helping us enforce existing animal welfare laws and cracking down on the national shame of rampant puppy mills in America.”

Hopefully the President will accept this challenge to help - animals across the country counting on it. If your family is looking to add a new pet, please adopt from a shelter.
