Casey lived for 1,000 days in a cage because of an animal hoarder.
It is a long and complicated story that has missed the attention from the media that it deserves. The only updates appear on animal welfare websites such as Care2 and the Wuffington Wag.

In April 2006 the property of suspected animal hoarder, Cindy Bemis was raided by Los Angeles, CA Animal Control. They took into custody 98 dogs that were suffering from starvation, mange and other illnesses. One of the dogs had to be euthanized because it was so sick and another was taken to a veterinary hospital in critical condition. The other dogs were distributed among several “county” animal shelters.

Bemis has insisted that she runs a respected animal sanctuary for rescued dogs and has fought the charges of neglect and hoarding for more than two years. She has also continued to bounce around several counties in California, re-opening her “sanctuary” each time with more cats and dogs.

She currently resides in Kern County, CA where there the laws about running a kennel are lenient. In the past one of Bemis’ shelters caught on fire, killing 50 dogs and 10 cats.

Bemis is an animal hoarder and doesn’t seem to be aware she is doing harm to her pets. Because she is fighting her case, all of the dogs confiscated on April 2006 must remain as prisoners at the county shelters.
They live in cages and small dog runs.
They have been there for 1,000 days.

Finally, Los Angeles has agreed to let several rescue groups help with the situation. They play with the dogs, walk them and bring toys. Several of the pups have found foster homes where they can live with a family until the legal case is decided.

The Wuffington Wag website has made a touching video about the loving, gentle nature of these poor dogs. Their online newspaper has been covering this story from the beginning and gives updates about the status of the Bemis dogs.
