Mayor pardons banished pig
When Bob Cromwell, mayor-elect for Carson City, NV decided to run for office last year he was told that his pet pot-bellied pig named Arnold had to go. Ten year-old Arnold had been with the Cromwell family since he was a piglet, but because of a new city ordinance that prohibited farm animals from living in residential areas; the law abiding candidate agreed the pig had to leave.
Although poor Arnold was nearly blind and very arthritic, a local animal rescue organization took custody of him. Some people in town thought the new law was a “dirty political trick” to out maneuver Cromwell and make him walk away from his candidacy, but that was not the case. And late last year, Bob Cromwell was elected to the office of mayor by the citizens of Carson City.
Yesterday, in his final official act outgoing Mayor Marv Teixeira issued a last minute pardon to Arnold.
"Now, therefore, I, Marv Teixeira, Mayor of Carson City, Nevada, do hereby proclaim Jan. 5, 2009, as 'Arnold's Plight' Awareness Day in Carson City," Russell read, "and acting in the capacity which I was elected by the citizens of Carson City and as my final act in such capacity, do hereby grant a full, complete and unconditional pardon to Arnold, the pot-bellied pig."
New Mayor Cromwell expressed his appreciation to everyone in attendance. The Nevada Board of Pardons Commission does not plan to look further into the case.
