Presidential first cat - India dies
President and Mrs. Bush will be leaving the White House without one of their beloved four-legged family members. The couple’s eighteen year-old cat, India, died on Sunday.
India who was also affectionately called, “Kitty” by the Bush family was adopted as a kitten and is the oldest of the first-family’s pets.
The female American shorthair cat was originally given to the President’s daughters, Jenna and Barbara, when they were nine years-old. Barbara named the kitten after Texas Ranger outfielder, Rueben Sierra whose nickname was El Indio. President Bush was co-owner of the team at the time.
The family also shared their home with another feline named Ernie up until 2001. Ernie whose namesake is Ernest Hemingway was an orange and white six-toed tomcat that proved to be too wild for the delicate furnishings at the White House. He was sent to live with a family friend several years ago.
President and Mrs. Bush have been role models to the American public during the past eight years for treating their pets as treasured family members. India will be greatly missed.
