Lucy the Dachshund had to be dug out of a badger hole by firefighters in England – after being trapped underground for six days.
The five-year-old dog ran away from her owners, John and Janet West during a walk. The couple called and searched for her for hours and finally heard her whimpering from inside a badger hole.
During the next five days they tried to coax the dog out by leaving some of her favorite food and treats on top of the hole. Finally they realized that Lucy was unable to come out on her own and they contacted the RSPCA (Royal Society for the Protection of Cruelty to Animals) and the local fire department.
The rescue got even more complicated when the West’s had to obtain a special license to begin digging on the property because the badger hole was on grounds that belong to the British government.
The fire department had to use special echo locating equipment to pinpoint Lucy’s exact position. Then they came in with a “mini-digger” to excavate the hole. There were also fears that the angry badgers that lived there would attack the dog. Finally after three hours and after digging 8ft down the tip of Lucy’s nose was visible.
Mrs. West said, “I couldn’t believe. I saw this little nose pop out then she shook her head and crawled out of the hole. She squealed at us and her tail started wagging straight away.”
After a quick exam by a veterinarian, who declared Lucy to be in good health – the little dog spent the rest of the day sleeping peacefully at her home.
