Graham is one of the 3 million cats turned over to
animal shelters in the U.S. annually.

Sadly more than 3 million cats and kittens end up in animal shelters every year. This year, because of the bad economy even more cats are at risk.

Home foreclosures and high unemployment rates are forcing pet owners to give up their feline family members at alarming rates. To help keep cats in their loving homes, the ASPCA and two retailers have come up with a novel plan.

During the month of November the ASPCA along with the makers of Fresh Step litter and 9Lives cat food will launch the National “Cat Assistance Program.” The goal of the program is to relieve some of the financial burden for cat owners, most in need, with a cat food and litter bank for thousands.

The kick-off for the ASPCA Cat Assistance Program will be held at a special event in New York City on Thursday, November 5 from 11a.m. to 2p.m. at the ASPCA headquarters at 424 E. 92nd Street. At the event volunteers will assemble Cat Assistance Kits and distribute them (one per household) to cat owners in financial distress.

Local Cat Food and Litter Banks
After the initial kick-off the program will head to other cities including San Francisco, Tampa, Nashville and Austin. At each city, the Cat Assistance Program will partner with local animal shelters to identify pet owners that need help and distribute assistance kits to them. The program will then continue to other town across the country.

The Program
The program will distribute a total of 20,000 free-product coupons from Fresh Step litter and 9Lives food. There will also be hundreds of Cat Assistance Kits distributed for those who qualify. The kits contain: a litter pan, litter scoop, cat toys and free-product coupons.

The Fresh Step coupons will provide up to 140,000 pounds of free litter and the 9Lives coupons will provide up to 31,500 pounds of free cat food.

You Can Help
Everyone can help the program by purchasing specially –marked packages of Fresh Step litter during November because a portion of the proceeds will go to support the ASPCA’s efforts to help cat owners in need. Look for the Paw Points code on the box and go to www.mypawspoints.com and enter the code. Fresh Step will donate up to $400,000 to the ASPCA for this program. The company has already donated nearly $2 million to the ASPCA since 2001.
