A team of 50 animal loving athletes will be running in the New York City Marathon to raise money for the North Shore Animal League on November 1st and across the country in Los Angeles on November 11th a high-end pooch boutique called Bark N’ Bitches that is dedicated to re-homing only rescued small breed dogs will host a star studded evening called “D Cups Saving Tea Cups.”

Fundraising for animal rescue groups is supremely important. The events are given clever names and the groups organizing them try their best to entertain the people who support them, but raising money for homeless pets is serious business.

After all, animal welfare groups are trying to save the lives of real animals that may not have a future without their help.

This week I have personally been preoccupied with fundraising because on Sunday October 18th my animal rescue group – Heaven Can Wait Animal Society is having our annual walk, which is cleverly named “Lose a Pound with Your Hound.” It’s a fun day for pet owners and their dogs with a walk, games, contests, food, and even an Elvis impersonator. But this year raising enough money is especially important.

You see HCWS is located in Las Vegas; town with the second highest number of home foreclosures in the country and a higher than average unemployment rate. Because of the recession we have seen more pets abandoned than ever before and more cats and dogs turned over to us by owners that are being forced to move. We are even having pets returned to us that were adopted 4 or 5 years ago.

And because our city has a devastatingly high euthanasia rate of more than 30,000 pets a year, HCWS has made spay and neuter an even bigger priority than in previous years. We opened our first low-cost spay and neuter clinic and plan to raise the number of cats and dogs we fix from 9,000 to 13,000 annually.

HCWS is hoping for 700 participants at the walk. That number is double from last year’s event. So this week, the e-mails having been flying back and forth as our volunteers put the final pieces of the event together.

This is a project we having been working on for more than 6 months. It has been an elaborate coordination of individuals that have worked many hours getting each step of the project, just right. We had to secure the park, get permits, get the attention of the public to attend, solicit prizes, coordinate the games and contests, layout the route for the walk, plan for parking and of course get a stage ready for Elvis.

My job is registration. This means that our committee not only has to sign-in 700 people, but see that their dogs are happy and entertained while they do it so there are no fights or leashes that get tangled. I am having a hard time even picturing 700 dogs gathered together in one park. But I know that our team of volunteers will do their best, because the lives of the cats and dogs we care for on a daily basis are counting on us.

So wish us luck and hopefully when you see a cleverly named fundraiser in the future you will fondly think of the countless hours many dedicated volunteers have worked to put it together and the animals that will benefit.
