Have you heard about the latest tactic used by the people at PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals)? Earlier this summer they took out a classified ad in Dog Fancy magainze that caused quite an uproar.

The ad offered a free “welcome home” gift to people who had recently purchased a purebred puppy. Unfortunately when unsuspecting individuals called the toll free number, they were met with a pre-recorded message that explained the “free gift” would be a body bag because buying a purebred puppy from a breeder cost the life of a dog waiting to be adopted in a shelter. The ad promoted PETA’s new campaign called, Buy One, Get One Killed.

The strong message was PETA’s way of educating the public about the pet overpopulation crisis at animal shelters. They wanted people to know that when a dog is bought from a breeder or pet store, a homeless pup living in a shelter misses out on the opportunity to find a new home and that the dog will probably have its life ended at the shelter. Because of overcrowding at city shelters across America, the vast majority must euthanize homeless pets as a way to control the population.

Personally, I long for the day when there are no more homeless pets, but I wonder if using shock and embarrassment as a method of education will make anyone shoot down to their nearest animal shelter and adopt a cat or dog?

I respect responsible pet owners, no matter how they acquire their animals. And although I would love to see a major shift to more shelter adoptions, I realize people have all sorts of reasons for adopting a specific pet. It still takes a lot of work and fortitude to raise and socialize a puppy and obviously the people who were duped by PETA took the time to buy a magazine that focused on these topics.

I think people are smart and compassionate and when they hear that millions of innocent pets are abandoned each year, they will make their way into a shelter or visit a rescue organization to adopt.
