President-elect Barack Obama’s promise to adopt a dog for his daughters is a psychologically healthy move that will help them adjust to becoming the first family of the United States.

Although the Obama’s will be adopting a puppy for their daughters, they should be aware that children need training on how to take care of a pet. The ultimate responsibility for the animal lies with the adults in the family. Here are some guidelines to make the experience a good one:

  • Teach children to respect a dog or cat. Animals can be unpredictable,   especially around young children.
  • Children under the age of 4 should be monitored around pets at all times.
  • Children under the age of 10 should not be the sole caregiver for the pet. Adults must keep an eye the situation and remind kids that animals are real creatures that need food, water and exercise; if the children become lax.
  • Pets should never be bothered while they are eating or sleeping.
  • Kids should be taught to never take away a bone or treat from a pet.
  • Teach children how to read the body language of the pet.
  • Have kids wash their hands after playing with the animal.
Remember children will learn about pet ownership by watching their parents.

I am sure that growing up with a puppy will be a wonderful experience for the Obama girls; one that will include hours of tossing a ball, going for walks and cuddling on the sofa. As a person involved in animal rescue, I strongly suggest that the Obama family adopt a homeless dog and save a life. And even if they purchase a puppy, I know they will be responsible owners that will spay/neuter the dog.
It will be fun to see what type of puppy they choose!
