The Dallas Turkey Trot welcomes families and dogs.

Don’t be a couch potato this Thanksgiving; get up and enter a local Turkey Trot for you and your pup.  Turkey Trot races have become so popular over the past few years, you are sure to find one close by.  And most of them welcome families and dogs.

Here are 6 fun reasons why you should not miss another exciting Turkey Trot:
  • It is a great bonding experience for you and your dog.
  • Turkey Trots start at a reasonable hour. Most begin between 8:00 – 9:00 a.m.
  • The races are relatively short. Turkey Trots are typically 5K-8K runs with the option of a 1-3 mile fun walk non-runners.
  • Registration fees are a bargain.
  • The proceeds typically support a local charity.
  • You get a new T-shirt. And many races offer event bandanas for dogs.

The Capital One Bank Dallas YMCA Turkey Trot is in its 41st year and calls itself the largest Thanksgiving Day run. It is pretty typical of what you will find at other runs. It is an 8-mile race with a 3-mile fun walk for non-runners. It begins at 9:00a.m. Dogs are welcome to enter, but must have a non-retractable leash at least 3 ft. in length. And proceeds from the Turkey Trot benefit the Dallas YMCA.

So check your local newspapers for the details, put on your running shoes, and grab your favorite pooch for the beginning of a fun, new Thanksgiving Day tradition. And one last tip: don’t forget a poop bag.
