Mikey was rescued in February 2008 by Heaven Can
Wait Sanctuary.  He would love to find a new home.

After you’ve fought for a parking space at the mall and pushed your way through the crowds for Black Friday specials, why not take a healthy break that will lower your blood pressure and improve your overall outlook. Make plans to visit a Black Friday Pet Adoption.

Animal rescue groups across the country are planning special adopt-a-thons for orphaned pets with black coats. Did you know that more black cats and dogs are euthanized in shelters than any other animal? And were you aware that it is harder to find a home for black cats and dogs?

They actually named the phenomenon in dogs because it is so prevalent.  It is called, Big Black Dog Syndrome and rescue groups like Black Pearl Dogs, who specialize in rescuing homeless black dogs, believe there are several reasons it. First, many people falsely believe that dogs with black coats are more aggressive. Second, rescuers think that people cannot clearly see the face of a black dog and therefore have a harder time reading their expressions. Rescue groups admit that even pictures of them do not show their features as well other pups. Black dogs are actually overlooked as people walk past their cages; as if they were a ghost.

Homeless black cats have a harder time getting adopted too. Just like dogs, people cannot clearly see their faces and simply walk past them. Superstitions also play a role with people believing that black cats bring bad luck. And other people falsely think cats with black coats are less friendly and harder to manage.

With this in mind Black Friday adopt-a-thons are being held from Portland OR to Kalamazoo MI to Voorhees NJ. Many of the rescue organizations like, Pet Rescue by Judy will be offering a 50% discount. Please check with the local animal shelters or rescue groups in your area to see if a Black Friday adoption day is scheduled. It will transform your hectic shopping day into a day you will always remember; the day you saved a life.
