Animal shelters take center stage from November 2-8th for Shelter Appreciation Week, while communities across the country pay tribute to the hard work they do 365 days a year. This year’s theme is, Shelter’s Rock and the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) has gathered the most talented and animal friendly artists from the music industry to help celebrate.

HSUS started the annual week to say thanks to animal shelters in 1996. They noticed all of the services shelters provide in addition to rescuing and adopting homeless pets. Many are responsible for investigating suspected cases of abuse and neglect; spay/neuter programs to stop pet overpopulation and public education campaigns.

This year G by Guess is helping to sponsor the week of recognition. Each of their stores will be offering a Shelter’s Rock t-shirt and tote bag from October 30 – November 14th. The company will donate $5.00 from every tote bag sold to HSUS and 100% of the net profits from sales of the t-shirts.

In past years, public, and non-profit shelters have used the appreciation week to educate people about their services and to hold fundraising events. If you would like to thank an animal shelter or rescue sanctuary in your city, here is a list of items always in demand:
  •  Kitty litter
  •  Pet carriers and crates of all sizes
  • *Kitten and puppy food and formula
  • *Cat and dog food
  • Cat and dog toys
  • Collars and Leashes
  • Pet beds
  • Clean towels
  • Stainless steel bowls of all sizes
  • Donation of your time to walk and play with the animals
  •

*Call the shelter in your area to find out what brands of food they use. Introducing new foods can cause distress for the animals.
