Previously I wrote an article about an all-girls Catholic private high school in the Rockaway Park section of Queens (Stella Maris high school) that will close in August after being in the community for 66 years.
When Stella Maris shuts down there will only be two all-girls private Catholic high schools in Queens. One of those schools will be the Mary Louis Academy. (AKA: TMLA). The Mary Louis Academy is a school that serves grades 9-12 located in the affluent Queens community of Jamaica Estates. The campus consists of eight buildings set on manicured private grounds atop one of the highest hills in Queens. It was founded in 1936 by the Sisters of Saint Joseph whose General Superior had a vision to establish an academy for the young women of Queens. Archbishop Thomas Molloy helped to establish TMLA because he believed that the girls of the Diocese of Brooklyn deserved an academy that would recognize all of their distinct talents and guide them to success. These beliefs still hold true at the school today. Further the school seeks to empower each student to realize and value her spiritual, intellectual, physical and emotional growth.
TMLA has a challenging academic curriculum in an atmosphere of respect and excellence. Every student receives a New York State Regents diploma upon graduation and every student in the class of 2009 enrolled in college. Many of these students were awarded academic scholarships.
At TMLA there is a network of over 100 wireless computers connecting the whole school. Science labs at TMLA are top notch and fully equipped. They support studies in chemistry, physics, biology and earth science. There is also a full program in forensic science, robotics and in the arts. The music program includes the glee club and the orchestra. The school also offers an extensive advanced placement program tailored to the needs of students. Individual students are assigned to a specific guidance counselor for four years. SAT prep classes are offered to the students for a low fee. All students must complete a requisite four year theology study. Further TMLA has many extracurricular activities and an extensive athletic program.
TMLA has a faculty of 100. Its average class size is 25 students with a student teacher ratio of 14:1. This year 1000 students are enrolled at the school.
