Ida made landfall at Dolphin Island, AL early this morning around 5:40 am. .coming ashore with winds of 45mph. The Gulf Coast remains on a tropical storm warning as storm surges may reach 5-7 feet. However, here in Louisiana we can expect a sunny day thanks to the storm making landfall to our east.
The Causeway is under a wind advisory caution this morning, which means that motorcycles are banned, as well as recreational vehicles such as motorhomes.
The Lapalco Blvd. Bridge is closed after being hit by a barge earlier this morning. The barge, carrying a crane hit a piling on the bridge causing authorities to close the bridge to traffic until it can be deemed safe for travel. Officials are not sure if weather was a condition in the barge accident or not at this time.
Other closures in the New Orleans area are the Canal Street and Gretna-Jackson Avenue ferries. The Chalmette ferry is open and operating.
Louisiana also escaped from the heavy rainfall that is dumping torrential rain over southern Mississippi, Alabama and Florida due to Ida.
Tropical Storm Ida is moving over Mobil Bay this morning and continues to move in a northeastern direction and has the potential to cause flooding from excessive rainfall. Winds are still gusting up to 45 mph but expected to die down today as the tropical storm loses some strength.
Residents in Florida can expect rainfall from 3 to 6 inches. Rain will continue through Wednesday evening for Florida residents.
