Artwork by Matte Stephens

Etsy is truly one of the great innovations of the world wide web. If you haven't had a chance to wander through the thousands of shops created by artists, jewelry designers, crafters, print makers, vintage sellers and more, take an hour or so and go to it. Etsy is kind of like Ebay in that sellers own their own "shops", and then a bit like your local craft or flea market where you may just discover the next big artist or designer selling their wares at insanely affordable prices.

Over the last few years, I've turned to Etsy not only to decorate my home, but for unique, memorable gifts. In my first "Best of Etsy" intallment, I thought I'd highlight some of my favorite places to buy affordable art...in the form of the ever popular art print. Not an original, but you you can get limited edition prints signed, numbered and dated by the artist which are just as significant to your collection...and usually for under $100 - or even under $30!!!

Here are some of my faves...many of whose art I own myself:

location: New Zealand
from the artist:
Hello, I'm Bernadette Sipkes - a printmaker and illustrator from Auckland, New Zealand. I started this etsy store so that I could share my passion for print and accessible art. I find inspiration in mid-century kitchenware, funiture and textile prints; vintage wallpaper; Scandinavian design; Florence Broadhurst; Lotta Jansdotter; Marimekko and; Lefor-Openo.

My drawing tool of choice is the humble pigment liner! Lately, however, I've been having fun using my digital pen and tablet therefore giving a "hand drawn with ink" look and feel to my digital art/giclée. I also like working with the Gocco (a type of toy serigraph printer from Japan) - its imperfections and unpredictability are part of its charm and it won't be around for long (http://www.savegocco.com) so I am making the most of it.

Berkley Illustration (love their animal portraits!)
location: Portland, OR
from the artist:
I'm a comics inspired gentleman surrounded by toys and Chewbacca masks. I like drawing sharks and animals and creatures and mustaches and superheroes. Sometimes I combine all of them - sometimes they are on their own - it really depends on my mood.

seasprayblue
location: Dresden, Germany
from the artist:
Hello. My name is Katrin Schwulst. I was born in former GDR and still live in this area in the beautiful town of Dresden. Art -especially photography and paintings- have always been important to me. At the age of 15 took my first pictures with the old camera of my parents. This was the point when I got deeper into it. Now I got my inspirations by listening to music or in the moment when I close my eyes very shortly before falling asleep. The most impressive pictures I keep in mind until I wake up. With etsy I found a way to publish my artwork. It makes me so happy just to see there are a lot of people who love it too.
