It was announced earlier this week that Penn State's Daryll Clark had been named as a semifinalist for the Davey O'Brien Award. The award is presented to the top college quarterback by the Davey O'Brien Foundation at the end of the season.
Clark was initially tabbed for the watch list back in early August and has represented himself fairly well on the field as the regular season has progressed. If you have been following along you would know that I have been tracking Clark's chase for a pair of prestigious Penn State records for season touchdown passes and passing yards. Clark has also been named the Big Ten offensive player of the week twice this season, with the most coming off of his most recent performance against Michigan.
There are 15 players remaining up for consideration for th award. Clark is one of two quarterbacks from the Big Ten with Iowa's Ricky Stanzi also up for the award. So how does Clark stack up against some of the top quarterbacks in the nation?

Clark actually leads some of the most notable quarterbacks in passing touchdowns and has more rushing touchdowns than Colt McCoy of Texas, Jimmy Clausen of Notre Dame and Jacory Harris of Miami. Only Florida's Tim Tebow and Central Michigan's one man offense by the name of Dan LeFevour have more rushing scores.
Now, the offenses at Texas and Notre Dame may be set up differently but Clark is also out-passing McCoy in total yards. Clark has thrown seven interceptions, which exceeds his total form 2009, but you can not deny that Clark has played well enough to receive some major consideration for some of the top quarterback awards. ESPN's Big Ten blogger Adam Rittenberg today has a video arguing why Clark should be considered for the Heisman Trophy.
The remaining four games will be important not just for Penn State's BCS hopes, but for Clark's reputation. Performing well down the stretch will put a brighter spotlight on Penn State's leading man on the offense.
Fans can vote for their pick for the Davey O'Brien Award by registering at their website. You may vote once per day for your favorite quarterback. The fan vote counts for 5% of the overall semifinalist vote. Finalists will be whittled down to three players and will be named on November 23.
