Bunny Jam: Easter celebrated Bay Area style with lots of adults in bunny suits having a blast

This Saturday, April 11^th, at NIMBY, 8419 Amelia Street in Oakland, the 9^th Annual Bunny Jam will unfold. Festivities begin at 8pm and the place will be hopping all night.

This is the kind of thing that brought me to San Francisco at the tender age of eighteen from the prim and proper suburbs of Boston. At the time Bunny Jam was not yet a sparkle the bunny collective's beady red eyes, but something in my imaginative young soul knew that the Bay Area was a place where huge congregations of adults dressed in bunny costumes and dancing about to original Easter mash-up music was possible, perhaps inevitable.

Sure, every city has easter egg hunts and some poor sod who puts on the town pink bunny costume whose insides probably smell like decades of other poor sods and the whiskey they downed to fortify themselves for a day of handing out baskets. But these festivities are enacted primarily for the benefit of children, adults only tolerate them. Bunny Jam combines the frivolity and fancifulness of children’s games with decidedly adult entertainment like cool art, burlesque and variety entertainment, and dancing spastically ‘till dawn.

And this is exactly the point, according the the bunnies behind Bunny Jam, all "self-proclaimed culture-jammers who take aspects of popular culture to outlandishly playful extremes and rebroadcast the resulting mental products in new and imporved versions."

The list of artists and entertainers who will be there to jam your culture is extensive. The complete list is below, but I will say that as Scotty the Blue Bunny is performing, it is worthwhile just to see him. Last time I saw him I laughed so hard I peed myself, just a little. Sangria is a dangerous substance in excess.

Much of what is on the bill is incomprehensible to the uninitiated (Simmerin’ Hasenfeffer’s Electronic EARemin or the ArmEGGedon Glowing Carrot of Mass Destruction) but doesn’t it just make you hop, hop, hop with curiosity?

And if that isn’t enough of a carrot to tempt you to join in the fun, Bunny Jam is also a fundraiser and it is taking place at the new NIMBY location, which is home to a wealth of amazing sculptors and metal workers and is therefore worth a visit anyway.

Bunny Jam says that just because we grow older, doesn’t mean we have to grow up. Says bunny at large Dr. Frankenpeep, "Bunny jam is a fully immersive Easter Art HOPpening akin to an eggsplosion in an Easter Egg factory of the mind. A truly one of a kind experience."
