Welcome to Seattle circa 1966, and some seriously cheap eats at Dick's Burgers, various Seattle locations, but the original, on 45th near the U-dub, was my parent's hang out. Having to watch their "dating" budget they would order 2 regular hamburgers, then just 19 cents! And take them back to my mom's apartment were they would dress them up with lettuce, cheese and tomatoes. Talk about thrifty!
Dick's is a true Seattle institution and an icon of days gone by, and while the 19 cent hamburger now runs about a buck and some change, they are still home of the Seattle CHEAP eats.
Now please, those from Southern Cal PLEASE DO NOT compare this small family run bunch of burger joints to anything down south, you'll be unhappy and wondering what's the fuss. This is no Tommy Burger, this is no In & Out burger, this is Seattle. And whoever hears someone telling them this place is Seattle's version of In-N-Out burger, please slap them up side the head, that's like comparing apples to organs! (Notice I didn't say oranges...)
This is old-skool, Seattle-style burgers. They have what? 4 choices of burgers? 1 size of fries and still hand scoop the ice cream for your milk shake. No glittery high fly'n, sing a song for a tip, mega-chain here, just a plain old fried burger.
Burgers are fried on a flat grill prior to your arrival, "...cheese boyger cheese boyger cheese boyger, no Pepsi, Coke!" (SNL, 1970's). Fries are limp, YES limp, soggy more often than not, oh my greasy bits of goodness. Shakes come in 1 size and 3 simple flavors, Chocolate, Vanilla, & Strawberry.
They are fast, fire up and serve a quality product and are untouched by time. Truly cheap eats.
Walk up counter service and head back to your car, unless you are at the Queen Anne location, otherwise leave greasy trails on your pants for the lack of a decent napkin.
