Bestselling author Mary Karr, on tour to support her new release, stops in at Washington DC’s Politics and Prose on Wednesday, November 4. Karr’s latest is Lit, which Library Journal calls “the memoir of the season.”
Here’s a synopsis:
Lit traces Karr’s quest for the stable, happy family she never had growing up, and the alcoholism, depression and inner demons that threaten to derail her along the way. No one can predict the electrifying path she finds to faith and salvation – including a deep peace with her mother, ‘the shadow stitched to the soles of my feet’ Karr has been attempting to outrun for decades. Ultimately hers is a survivor’s story, and LIT is a saga only Mary Karr could tell with such piercing humor, incandescent prose and soulful introspection."
Lit is the long awaited sequel to Karr’s first memoir, The Liars’ Club, and her second, Cherry – accounts of a tumultuous childhood and adolescence. The Liars’ Club and Cherry made The New York Times bestseller list and won Karr numerous awards and accolades. Advance buzz for Lit is also strong:
Mary Karr restores the memoir form’s dignity in Lit.” Vanity Fair
An absolute gem that secures Karr’s place as one of the best memoirists of her generation.” Kirkus Reviews (starred review)
Karr’s poetic sensibility infuses every sentence of her story with an alliterative and symbolic energy, conjuring echoes of poet Gerard Manley Hopkins, and occasionally, Sylvia Plath.” Publishers Weekly
Karr’s Wednesday appearance at Politics and Prose starts at 7:00 pm. Karr then tours the country until Spring of 2010.
