This year marks the 40th anniversary of the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. The festival, which has been held every year at the Fair Grounds Race Track, is taking place on April 24 - 26 & April 30 - May 3, 2009. As a veteran attendee of this great and wonderful festival I've picked up a few things over the years, which I have chosen to share with you today. Sadly, most of the things on this list have either (a) happened to me, or (b) happened to a close friend of mine.
-Travel Light: The more you bring with you, the more you are prone to lose, or get stolen!
-Don't sneak in food!: Be aware, Festival Security will do a search of all personal bags and purses upon entry. If you bring . food they will find it (or any other prohibited items for that matter!), and make you throw it anyway –even something as small as a bag of potato chips. Trust me, it happened to me two years ago.
-Wear proper footwear: Do not wear shoes that are particularly valuable, as they will probably get rained on, muddied, or have beer spilled on them by uncoordinated concert-goers, like myself. Your best bet is going to be flip-flops or wellies.
-Protect your eyes...and your wallet: While it is extremely important to protect your eyes from the Sun's evil UV rays, you also need to avoid getting them lost, or stolen (or even worse, crushed). And remember, it's probably best to leave that pricey pair of Ray-Bans at home.
-Remember to keep track of your phone!: It's probably the most important thing you'll bring with you to Jazz Fest, so take care of it. If you don't already own a cell phone clip, I would highly suggest purchasing one before heading to the 'Fest.
Happy festing!
