Bargains wines: A tale of two Chardonnays
A “bargain” wine’s no bargain if you don’t like it. I found that $9.99 can buy two very different Chardonnays – one you’ll be happy to serve to guests, and one that might go down the drain.
Bad news: Ravenswood 2007 Vintner’s Blend Chardonnay. Queue the “Twilight Zone” music. I raved about a bottle of Ravenswood Chardonnay a few weeks ago, but this week’s wine was a big disappointment. Could the blends be uneven? Could the handling of the wines between vineyard and store shelf have been different enough to alter the flavor? On this go-round, I found a tangy edge that I didn’t care for. Sure, there was a slight buttery note and a little crisp fruit, but nothing to write home about. This raven’s tap, tap, tapping on my wine fridge door, but I’m not sure I’ll open it again.
Good news: Bogle 2008 Chardonnay. After a successful foray into Bogle’s Cabernet Sauvignon, I was delighted to find an equally tasty Chardonnay. A little oaky, a little fruity, light enough to sip on its own but equally good with chicken or chocolate. Many budget whites rely on sugar to cover a wine’s flaws. But this wine doesn’t have any flaws! Find out more at

It feels great to stay on budget with wine you can enjoy!
