Few things in life bring the joys normally associated with pet ownership. These cuddly, loyal, four-legged friends become members of our families and are, in some cases, treated with more kindness and respect than the homeless folks we drive past or step over on the way to the office.
Not, however, in the Muncie, Indiana home of the Collins family.
Daniel J. Collins – a 39 year-old U. S. Navy veteran with no prior convictions – was sentenced to 18-months in jail after pleading guilty to forcing his 7-year-old daughter to stab the family’s cat to death.
According to the girl and her 11 year-old brother, this Father of the Year candidate ordered the kids to stab the 8-month-old feline so they would ‘learn how to kill.’
Why not just buy them the latest installment of “Grand Theft Auto”?
In a statement, the arresting officers said the son attempted to hide the cat from Collins, but his father found the animal and strangled it as his two children watched.
Charged with a felony count of animal cruelty and two felony counts of neglect of a dependent, Super Dad defended his actions by saying he was “intoxicated at the time and remembered very little about what happened that day.”
One can only hope his fellow prisoners share Mr. Collins’ passion for teaching – especially for the lesson on ‘picking up the shower soap.’
