Steve Wyrick has never shied away from a challenge.
So, to celebrate the Fourth of July and the opening of Club Tattoo, a shop he co-owns with Lincoln Park frontman Chester Bennington, he's giving audiences a taste of his larger-than-life show at Planet Hollywood; he'll undertake a "death drop" never before attempted by any illusionist in the world.
At 8:30 p.m., Pennington will shackle Wyrick into an equipment locker he uses to store his band's equipment. Connected to a crane by a scant few ropes, the box will dangle over a bed of 500 flaming spikes 80 feet below. The ropes will be set on fire, forcing Wyrick to make his escape before the last rope breaks. He'll have to jump 20 feet off the burning box to a safety rope and rappel down while avoiding the spikes and the blistering heat.
The event is free and takes place at the Miracle Mile Shops' southernmost Strip entrance, next to Hawaiian Tropic Zone.
During the performance, all spectators will receive a free MolliCoolz Shaker to keep them cool in the face of the heat.
Earlier that day, Pennington and Wyrick will be part of an autograph signing at the Miracle Mile Shops' Club Tattoo. Members of Pennington's new band, Dead by Sunrise, will also be on hand, and free tickets will be available at the signing for a concert later that evening inside the Wyrick Theater. (702) 777-9974.
