Fun in the Sun on the ITA Summer Circuit
Sixteen years ago, University of Indiana's head women's coach Lin Loring had an idea to bring together current college players, incoming college freshman and junior players during the summer months. Over the years, the ITA Summer Circuit has seen over 22,000 players compete. The events begin this week and run through the end of July, with four events in each of the East, Southeast, Midwest, Central, Mountain, Southwest and West locations.
The majority of the ITA Summer Circuit events are on college campuses, making them a great way for juniors and soon-to-be freshman to get their feet wet in the college tennis arena. Many players use the opportunity to travel together over the summer with their teammates and some play with their season rivals instead. Not accidentally, the week-to-week travel has the feel of the professional circuit within the college arena.
Each tournament location on the ITA Summer Circuit has men's and women's singles and doubles, with mixed doubles also played at most. To get in all the matches, singles play a 10-point match tiebreaker instead of a third set. As in college matches, there are eight game pro sets in doubles and the men play with the collegiate no-let rule.
After the
ITA Summer Circuit has concluded, there will be a
ITA National Championship, held at
Coach Loring's University of Indiana, August 8-12. For more information on the circuit and the championship, visit the
