It was another rocky weekend for some of the top teams in the country. And there was also lots of excitement for some of the lower ranked -- and unranked -- ones. Here's a recap of some of the matches that left everyone gasping for more:
Proving there's more than slot machines in Vegas…
The UNLV women entered the weekend ranked as the 71st team in the country, but it doesn't look like they will stay that way long. It all started on Friday with a 4-3 victory over unranked New Mexico. Saturday got a bit tougher when the Lady Rebels upset No. 32 TCU with the same score as Alisa Razina squeezed out a third set win over Anna Sydorska. Then UNLV finished off the weekend with yet another upset -- 5-2 over No. 29 San Diego State.
Southern Cal over Stanford -- times two
The Pac10 Conference is loaded with top teams and this weekend the fun began as they started playing each other. It was Southern Cal over Stanford for both teams. On the men's side, the big match was a show-stopper filled with tiebreakers as No.9 Southern California narrowly beat No. 8 Stanford, 4-3, with
Jaak Poldma defeating Alex Clayton, thirteenth in the country. The Cardinals women also dropped one to USC -- giving their Trojans their first win over Stanford in 23 years at 5-2.
SEC Shocker
The University of Mississippi had a lot of celebrating to do as both the men's and women's team took out the University of Florida. The 35th-ranked women got their first win in 10 years over the 14th-ranked Gators when Freshman Gabriela Rangel clinched it at No. 4. The men had an easier time with a 4-2 win over Florida.
Please Come to Boston
It wasn't only the hockey team who was celebrating at BU this weekend. The women's tennis team also had something to cheer about. Down 1-6,1-4, senior Cory Lefkowitz rallied back to defeat Alex Bara of VCU, 1-6,7-6(2),6-1. It gave Boston University its first win over a nationally ranked opponent (Dartmouth, 3/31/07) in two years.
